The UK's metrication in the 1960s-70s excluded road signs due to enormous replacement costs (estimated at £700 million today). Cultural resistance and the expense of changing every road sign, car speedometer, and legal speed limit kept miles in place. The government decided partial metrication was more practical than forcing a complete change.

The golden ratio (1.618) is surprisingly close to the mile-to-kilometer ratio (1.609). This means Fibonacci numbers work: 5 miles ≈ 8 km, 8 miles ≈ 13 km, 13 miles ≈ 21 km. For other numbers, multiply by 1.6 or use: miles + 60% = kilometers. Example: 10 miles + 6 = 16 km.

Airlines use nautical miles (1.852 km) for navigation and flight planning, but show passengers distances in either miles or kilometers depending on the airline's home country. US carriers typically display miles, while most others show kilometers. Frequent flyer programs similarly vary by airline origin.

The 1908 London Olympics extended the marathon from 40 km to 42.195 km (26 miles 385 yards) so it could start at Windsor Castle and finish in front of the royal box at the stadium. This random distance became the official standard in 1921 and remains unchanged, making it neither a round metric nor imperial distance.

Only the US, Liberia, Myanmar (Burma), and the UK use miles for road distances. However, the UK is unique in mixing metric and imperial, while Liberia and Myanmar are slowly transitioning to metric. Some Caribbean islands and territories also use miles due to US or UK influence.
