Standard race distances are metric worldwide: 5K, 10K, 21.0975K (half marathon), 42.195K (marathon). The marathon's odd distance comes from the 1908 London Olympics, where the course was extended to finish in front of the royal box.

For quick conversion: take km/h, divide by 8, then multiply by 5. Example: 80 km/h ÷ 8 = 10, × 5 = 50 mph. Another method: multiply km/h by 0.6. For common speeds: 50 km/h ≈ 30 mph, 100 km/h ≈ 60 mph, 130 km/h ≈ 80 mph. The exact formula is km/h ÷ 1.609 = mph.
